NFC North Offensive Line Injury Data

For the purposes of this article series, the positional players listed below are

the team’s top scoring fantasy players from the QB, RB, and pass catcher

position (WR/TE).

Chicago Bears

Team Record: 12-4

BYE: Week 5

Injuries to starting Offensive Linemen:

  • Kyle Long missed Weeks 9-16 with a foot injury.
  • Eric Kush missed Week 8 with a neck injury.

In games where all 5 starting offensive linemen played (Weeks 1-4, 6-7, 17) → 7 games

Player Stats

  • Mitchell Trubisky was a top 12 QB three times, averaging 21.7 fantasy points/game.
  • Jordan Howard was a top 12 RB one time, averaging 12.3 fantasy points/game.
  • Tarik Cohen was a top 12 RB three times, averaging 15.5 fantasy points/game.
  • Allen Robinson missed Week 17 a rib injury. He was a top 12 WR zero times, averaging 10.9 fantasy points/game.

Team Stats

Total Pass yards/game: 237.6

Total Rush yards/game: 136.1

In games where at least one starting lineman was out (Weeks 8-16) → 9 games

Player Stats

  • Mitchell Trubisky missed Weeks 12-13 with a right shoulder sprain. He was a top 12 QB three times, averaging 15.8 fantasy points/game.
  • Jordan Howard was a top 12 RB one time, averaging 10.5 fantasy points/game.
  • Tarik Cohen was a top 12 RB one time, averaging 14.0 fantasy points/game.
  • Allen Robinson missed Weeks 8-9 with a groin injury. He was a top 12 WR one time, averaging 12.5 fantasy points/game.

Team Stats

Total Pass yards/game: 211.2

Total Rush yards/game: 109.4

*Conclusion: Kyle Long was the biggest factor for the Bears’ change in offensive production when he was out of the lineup. He was the only starting offensive lineman to miss significant time. With a starting lineman out of the lineup, the offense as a whole performed worse, averaging less rushing and passing yards per game. Tarik Cohen and Jordan Howard both performed worse with a starting lineman out of the lineup.

Minnesota Vikings

Team Record: 8-7-1

BYE: Week 10

Injuries to starting Offensive Linemen:

  • Pat Elflein missed Weeks 1-2 with an ankle injury.
  • Tom Compton missed Weeks 8-9 with a knee injury.
  • Riley Reiff missed Weeks 6-8 with a foot injury.

In games where all 5 starting offensive linemen played (Weeks 3-5, 11-17) → 10 games

Player Stats

  • Kirk Cousins was a top 12 QB four times, averaging 16.5 fantasy points/game.
  • Dalvin Cook missed Weeks 3 and 5 with a hamstring strain. He was a top 12 RB three times, averaging 14.0 fantasy points/game.
  • Adam Thielen was a top 12 WR four times, averaging 16.7 fantasy points/game.

Team Stats

Total Pass yards/game: 246.0

Total Rush yards/game: 81.3

In games where at least one starting lineman was out (Weeks 1-2, 6-9) → 6 games

Player Stats

  • Kirk Cousins was a top 12 QB three times, averaging 19.55 fantasy points/game.
  • Dalvin Cook missed Weeks 6-8 with a hamstring strain. He was a top 12 RB zero times, averaging 13.8 fantasy points/game.
  • Adam Thielen was a top 12 WR four times, averaging 23.2 fantasy points/game.

Team Stats

Total Pass yards/game: 262.7

Total Rush yards/game: 113.3

*Conclusion: The Vikings offense was actually more productive both through the air and on the ground with when a starting lineman was out due to injury. The biggest discrepancy was with Kirk Cousins and Adam Thielen, who averaged 3 and 6 fantasy points more per game, respectively. Dalvin Cook produced relatively consistently regardless of the health of the offensive line.

Green Bay Packers

Team Record: 6-9-1

BYE: Week 7

Injuries to starting Offensive Linemen:

  • Bryan Bulaga missed Weeks 14-15 with a knee injury.
  • Lane Taylor missed Weeks 15 with a foot injury.
  • Byron Bell missed Weeks 14-17 with a knee injury.

In games where all 5 starting offensive linemen played (Weeks 1-6, 8-13) → 12 games

Player Stats

  • Aaron Rodgers was a top 12 QB six times, averaging 19.7 fantasy points/game.
  • Aaron Jones missed Weeks 1-2 with a suspension. He was a top 12 RB two times, averaging 15.1 fantasy points/game.
  • Davante Adams was a top 12 WR five times, averaging 21.9 fantasy points/game.

Team Stats

Total Pass yards/game: 274.9

Total Rush yards/game: 105.7

In games where at least one starting lineman was out (Weeks 14-17) → 4 games

Player Stats

  • Aaron Rodgers was a top 12 QB two times, averaging 18.4 fantasy points/game.
  • Aaron Jones missed Weeks 16-17 with an MCL sprain. He was a top 12 RB one time, averaging 10.2 fantasy points/game.
  • Jamaal Williams started Weeks 16-17 in place of Aaron Jones. He finished as a top 12 RB one time, averaging 16.3 fantasy points/game.
  • Davante Adams missed Week 17 with a knee injury. He was a top 12 WR three times, averaging 21.7 fantasy points/game.

Team Stats

Total Pass yards/game: 234.8

Total Rush yards/game: 99.75

*Conclusion: All in all, the Packers’ offense was more productive when the offensive line was completely healthy. Aaron Rodgers threw for more yards per game in weeks where is offensive line was at full health, but from a fantasy perspective, it really didn’t matter. Both he and Davante Adams were equally as productive when the line was healthy and when it was injured. The rushing attack gained a few more yards on the ground per game, but in general, the backs were just as productive when the line was banged up.

Detroit Lions

Team Record: 6-10

BYE: Week 6

Injuries to starting Offensive Linemen:

  • Ricky Wagner missed Week 15 with a concussion.
  • T.J. Lang missed Week 2 with a back injury. He also missed Week 5 with a concussion and was placed on IR in Week 10, missing Weeks 10-17.

In games where all 5 starting offensive linemen played (Weeks 1, 3-5, 7-9) → 7 games

Player Stats

  • Matthew Stafford was a top 12 QB zero times, averaging 18.2 fantasy points/game.
  • Kerryon Johnson was a top 12 RB one time, averaging 12.2 fantasy points/game.
  • Kenny Golladay was a top 12 WR one time, averaging 11.9 fantasy points/game.

Team Stats

Total Pass yards/game: 237.1

Total Rush yards/game: 105.1

In games where at least one starting lineman was out (Weeks 2, 10-17) → 9 games

Player Stats

  • Matthew Stafford was a top 12 QB two times, averaging 12.3 fantasy points/game.
  • Kerryon Johnson missed Weeks 12-17 with a sprained MCL. He was a top 12 RB two times, averaging 18.1 fantasy points/game.
  • Kenny Golladay missed Week 17 with a chest injury. He was a top 12 WR three times, averaging 15.5 fantasy points/game.

Team Stats

Total Pass yards/game: 212.9

Total Rush yards/game: 100.0

*Conclusion: The Lions’ offense was more productive both through the air and on the ground when the offensive line was at full strength. The biggest beneficiary of a fully healthy offensive line was Matthew Stafford, who averaged 18.2 fantasy points/game when all five starting linemen were active. When an offensive lineman was out, Stafford averaged just 12.3 points per game, likely because he had less time to deliver the ball accurately to his receivers and he didn’t have his security blanket in the short game, Golden Tate, after the trade to the Eagles. Kenny Golladay appeared to benefit from a banged up offensive line, averaging about 3.5 more fantasy points each week that an offensive lineman was injured and out of the lineup.
